FORM FINDING (2025)
Narra Bukulla Studio, Tanja, NSW.
Materials: Aluminium, termite nests, wax, digital prints, collected objects, cyanotype prints.

FORM FINDING was made and exhibited at Narra Bukulla on Djiringanj Country on the Far South Coast of NSW. These works are inspired by the natural surroundings and the rich history of artists and architects who lived and worked on the property.

My floor sculpture consists of 5 wax-coated termite nests placed together with geometric aluminium structures. At first glance this might seem to be a pairing of opposites. However I’m interested in their similarities. Both these structures can expand in any direction until they no longer support their own weight and collapse.

Time-lapse colour recordings of the land and sea at nearby Bithry Inlet are presented as two digital prints. Captured over 11 days and nights using iterative coding, the first colour recorded is at the centre and the last colour is at the circumference. Despite being created by code, these sequential arrangements of sampled colours remind me of patterns in nature – a tree’s growth rings or star trails seen in astrophotography.

I also collected objects during regular walks along the tideline. Cyanotypes I made with these chance finds were displayed on a table with some of the objects.

By likening human-made structures and digital systems to patterns in nature, I hope to highlight impulses humans share with the more-than-human world and show respect for the life-sustaining ecosystems of which we are a part.
